5 types of face shields and their uses

Wearing a face shield with a face mask can effectively reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

This is why many areas including Metro Manila have required residents and employees to keep a face shield on in public spaces at all times, whether or not there are confirmed cases in the area.

But, since there are so many different kinds and designs to choose from, general and occupational medicine doctor Dr. Gerald Belandres explained five types of face shields and their respective features during a segment on “Unang Hirit.”

1. Bamboo face shield

Bamboo face shields, like these ones made by Cotabato farmers, are lightweight and easy to use.

A plastic face shield will be fastened over your face by a flexible bamboo rod and an elastic band that goes around the crown of your head.

Dr. Belandres said a bamboo face shield can be ideal, if you don’t mind disinfecting it from time to time and make sure the bamboo doesn’t snap while using it.

2. Foam band face shield

This face shield has a foam band across the forehead to make wearing it more comfortable.

Dr. Belandres said this shield might be a smart buy since it sometimes comes with a complementary cloth mask.

It can also be quite durable since the edges of the plastic shield are protected.

3. 2-in-1 face shield with face mask

This mask provides a cloth cover over your mouth while protecting your eyes with a plastic shield.

The mask can fit securely over the eyes and mouth since there are two separate bands.

However, Dr. Belandres said the effectiveness of this type of face shield may vary depending on the size or face shape. It might fit too loose or too snug.

4. Sun screen face shield

This shield can protect your face from the sun. But can it protect you from COVID-19?

Dr. Belandres clarified that a sun screen face shield was not designed for such a purpose, so it would still be advisable to use this kind of shield with an actual face shield.

The expert would also recommend wearing an actual mask with it, since the mouth and nose area have breathing holes.

5. Rider’s face shield

A rider needs to protect his eyes, nose and mouth, and this mask can take care of it.

The face shield includes a goggle-like eye shield that fits securely around the head with a band, which is ideal for motorcycle riders who need to keep their eyes on the road.

This face shield also has a mouth guard, but Dr. Belandres said it would be safer to wear a face mask underneath, just in case.

The Philippines on Sunday reported 3,420 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total confirmed cases to 161,253. This includes 112,586 recoveries and 2,665 deaths. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
