Atopic dermatitis, also known as skin asthma, is actually much more common than you may think.

According to a “Pinoy MD” episode with dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez on Tuesday, it is the most common chronic skin disorder, and up to 20% of children and 10% of adults get it.

“Matagalan na sakit at paulit-ulit, minsan taon ... minsan mawawala, minsan babalik,” said Marquez.

“Kadalasan may inflammation ng balat, dryness ng skin, and also minsan nagtutubig at sobrang kati po niyan,” she added.

The disease can also occur repeatedly in the same area, commonly on the face, extensors of the arms, back of the knees and neck, chest and back.

To treat atopic dermatitis and understand the disease better, Marquez shared some knowledge and tips.

1. It can be hereditary.

Marquez said if your relatives or parents have atopic dermatitis, there’s a high chance that you will get it too.

“Mas namamana sa mga nanay,” she said.

2. Avoid triggers.

The doctor said atopic dermatitis could be triggered by something in the environment.

It can be caused by house dust mites, perfumes, extreme heat, extreme cold, bacteria, food, stress and even pets.

“Karamihan nagre-react sa house dust mite kasi may cracks ang skin na hindi nakikita ng atopic patients, nagca-cause ng inflammation in the skin,” Marquez said.

“Pwede rin perfume, nakaka-worsen ng asthma of the skin. Pwede din extreme heat, sobrang init pag nagpapawis, or sobrang lamig sobrang natutuyo ’yung balat, delikado din.”

It’s best for atopic dermatitis patients to avoid these triggers to minimize flareups.

3. Don’t scratch your skin.

When you scratch your skin, your skin breaks and becomes more prone to inflammation and infection, said Marquez.

To minimize scratching for small children, it’s best to cut their nails or make them wear mittens.

4. Use the right cream.

“Meron din mga dapat pinapahid,” Marquez said. ‘To control the inflammation, lagay din antibacterial cream or ointment, antifungal kung may yeast.”

She added that it’s best to consult with your doctor to know which cream to use. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
