What is up with adult onset of allergies?

Although we didn't have a certain allergy growing up, many people may find themselves suddenly allergic to a particular food in adulthood.

In a Pinoy MD episode on Saturday, dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said that this condition isn't bizarre at all. It's called an adult onset of allergy or food allergy and many studies have proven that this type of condition exists.

"Kapag kumain ka ng onting pagkain, magde-develop ka ng antibody to detect that food, immunoglobulin e (IGE)," Dr. Marque said. "Pag na sobrahan, later on kumain ka nang mas marami, nagpro-produce IGE enough to cause symptoms."

Dr. Marquez also explained that people who think they're only getting allergic reactions in adulthood could actually have had the allergies since they were kids, except they manifested differently in childhood.

"Maaaring meron ka na talagang [allergy] sa food na 'yun, iba lang manifestation like diarrhea or headache. 'Di talaga rashes," she said.

To know more about your allergies, Dr. Marquez suggests taking a skin prick test or blood test to determine what food you're allergic to.
