Can women still get pregnant and give birth even with myoma?
Can women still conceive a child and give birth despite having myoma?
It all depends, Dr. Raul Villamor said in a recent episode of PinoyMD.
"Depende ito sa location at saka sa size ng myoma, kasi ang myoma marami din puwedeng tutubuan ‘yan. Puwede doon sa loob ng matres, ang tinatawag natin na submucosal myoma. Or puwede ring subserosal — 'yung sa lining lang ng matres doon sa labas na parte ng matres, o doon mismo sa muscle," Villamor said.
[It depends on size of the myoma and the location of growth. Myoma can grow inside the uterine cavity — we call that submucosal myoma. It's called subserosal myoma when it grows in the uterine lining, outside the uterus, and those growing in the muscle itself is called intramuscular.]
According to Villamor, myoma is situated inside the uterus can cause threatened miscarriage or premature labor.
Additionally, he said the mother might not be able to give birth normally and should opt to give birth via Cesarean section.
However, myoma is situated outside the uterus can allow the woman to give birth normally.
He said it is important to discuss it with the doctor early on so the mother can decide on the right birth plan.
Myomas are benign but solid tumors growing out from the muscular layer of the uterus. There are three types: submucosal or myoma growing in the uterine cavity, subserosal or myoma growing into the surface of the uterus, and intramuscular of myoma growing within the muscular layer. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
