Chicken skin in your underarms? Here’s how you can prevent it

Having chicken skin in your underarms might not look great and can be downright embarrassing. But it's actually common, especially for women who constantly opt for different hair removal techniques.

According to certified dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez, irritation is the leading cause of chicken skin, scientifically known as Keratosis Pilaris.

“The main cause of chicken skin is irritation from constant waxing, shaving, and plucking or using deodorants that are too strong which causes clogging of the pores,” Dr. Marquez said in a recent Pinoy MD episode.

If you’re experiencing chicken skin, fret not. Dr. Marquez recommended two simple options to cure it.

First is to apply creams with lactic acid or glycerin. This will moisturize and smoothen your underarm area.

Using products with ingredients like lactic acid in your skincare regime help in increasing cell turnover, eliminating accumulated dead skin cells on the epidermis or the top layer of the skin.

The second option is to opt for permanent laser hair removal treatment so the skin won’t be damaged from constant waxing, shaving, or plucking.

“Lasers are advised so you can permanently remove the bumps f the hair follicles. Pigment lasers are also advised to smoothen and whiten your underarm,” Dr. Marquez concluded.
