Moira Dela Torre opens up about eating disorder, infertility, and hormone imbalance

[TRIGGER WARNING: eating disorders, depression]

Moira Dela Torre opened up about some personal battles she bravely endured in the last couple of years.

In a very real and personal Instagram post, the singer revealed having gone through Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and estrogen dominance, as well as bulimia and infertility.

According to Mayo Clinic, Hashimoto's disease is when the “immune-system cells lead to the death of the thyroid's hormone-producing cells. The disease usually results in a decline in hormone production (hypothyroidism).”

Meanwhile, “Estrogen dominance is the condition of increased estrogen levels relative to progesterone levels in the body. Estrogen dominance may be the result of overproduction of estrogen by the body, changes in estrogen metabolism and excretion, or an imbalance in the estrogen to progesterone ratio,” according to the US Department of Veteran Affairs.

“In 2020, I secretly became bulimic for [two] years during a season that left me struggling mentally and physically,” Moira began.

“I've been known to be someone whose weight fluctuated a lot — and I'd get conscious, not really because of my physical appearance but [more so] because of how I felt internally. I always felt uncomfortable and unable to function at my best,” she added.

In 2021, she was introduced to Dr. Sheree of The Core Clinic, who “started working on my hormones and forever changed my life for the better.”

According to Moira, she took a hormone test, which is how she learned that stress, depression, and misdiagnosed PCOS were “messing up her system.”

Instead of exercising, diet, or surgeries, the singer took supplements and worked with the clinic to correct her hormones.

Fast forward to one year and one month later, Moira has lost 60 lbs and is in a much better place now.

“[Even] with weather changes, jetlag, and lack of rest, I think it was the first time I ever felt fully present and completely enjoyed every moment of my season with the people I’m so blessed to be surrounded with,” she said.

“Mentally, I've never felt so alive. I felt 100% and felt so happy doing what I love, especially being able to do it well,” she added.

According to the singer, she is now also cleared of “Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, estrogen dominance, and no longer infertile after two years of being declared to be.”

“Today, I went to the gym for the first time in 2, maybe 3 years HEHE and don't ever remember feeling this happy and healthy in my life," she said.

Kudos Moira for taking action and prioritizing yourself! May more of us do the same bravely take even just the first step.
