World's largest kidney stone removed from Sri Lankan man
A huge kidney stone removed from a Sri Lankan man has set the Guinness World Record as the largest kidney stone ever.
According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," the stone was removed from Canistus Coonghe in Colombo, Sri Lanka on June 1.
The kidney stone measures 13.372 centimeters long, which is bigger than the average size of a kidney.
Humans have a pair of kidneys, which functions as a waste disposal system of the body. The organs filter the blood.
Data from the National Kidney ang Transplant Institute (NKTI) has shown that more and more Filipinos are suffering from kidney diseases. Patients who are undergoing dialysis have increased by 15 to 20 percent.
Among possible causes of kidney stones are obesity, not drinking enough water, and eating too much salty or sweet food.
Humans can still survive even with just one functioning kidney. This is why it's possible to donate one kidney to someone in need.
By virtue of Proclamation No. 184 in 1993, former president Fidel Ramos declared June as National Kidney Month.
