155 babies in Quezon, Rizal, Laguna undergo free newborn screening through GMA Kapuso Foundation, DOH

A total of 155 babies in the provinces of Quezon, Rizal, and Laguna underwent free newborn screening through the help of GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Department of Health (DOH) - CALABARZON.

According to "24 Oras" Monday, among the beneficiaries of the newborn screening caravan was Analie Salen's baby.

Analie gave birth back in July but was not able to have her baby undergo newborn screening due to the onslaught of Typhoon Crising and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

She was finally able to have her baby screened through GMA Kapuso Foundation and DOH's caravan.

"To prevent ang mental retaradtion and, of course early death. Kapag nag-undergo sila ng newborn screening and na-detect na meron and early treatment, they can grow normal," said Tanay Municipal Health Officer Dr. Amor Dulce Rivera.

Meanwhile, in Gumaca, Quezon, 11-year-old Thea is proof of the importance of newborn screening as it allowed doctors to detect that she has congenital hypothyroidism. This allowed Thea to receive the appropriate treatment for her condition.

According to DOH-CALABARZON Medical Officer III Dr. Monica Stephanie Moreno, the DOH offers support for children and their families if they are found to have any medical conditions.

"Magkakaroon sila ng mga check-ups or appointments sa continuity clinics natin. Dun tayo magkakaroon ng free laboratory, medical services, kaya natin silang i-cater long-term," said Moreno.
