Why do we feel 'lazy' when the weather is hot? Experts explain

Do you feel like just lazing around when the weather is too hot?

It's not simply a matter of attitude—there is a science behind this "mood" and something is actually happening within our bodies.

In Katrina Son's report on "24 Oras Weekend," Sunday, experts explained how high temperatures affect our ability to function or stay active.

"Tawag actually diyan is summer lethargy," said Dr. Benjamin Co, group chief medical officer of Metro Pacific Health Inc. "'Di ba pag ang mga gadget natin nalo-lowbat, nagkaroon tayo ng power saving mode? So ganoon din 'yung katawan natin."

"Kapag mainit kasi, iyong katawan natin we need to use a bit more of energy. Ibig sabihin din noon, mas mataas 'yung chance ng katawan natin na mapagod," said Dr. Ruthlyn Pecolera-Salvosa, an ENT specialist.

When accompanied by irritability, it could be a sign of dehydration. The lack of fluids make it more difficult for the brain and the body to function, so experts recommend drinking at least two liters of water, buko juice, and other electrolyte drinks.

Digestion can also slow down during hot weather, so light meals are recommended. People should also cool down with baths and use cooling towels if necessary.

Under extreme heat, the human body can experience heat cramps, an increased heart rate, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. —MGP, GMA News
