This QC store is collecting used cooking oil and coffee grounds

Looking to be more sustainable and love Planet Earth more? Consider donating your kitchen waste to Back to Basics Eco Store (BTB).

Located in Maginhawa, Quezon City, the zero waste general store is holding a collection drive of used cooking oil and coffee grounds, accepting your kitchen waste until 12 p.m. on Sunday, August 9.

On social media, BTB said it has partnered with RMC Oil and Ecosolutions, to "help transform waste into soaps, fertilizers and more."

In a 2023 Instagram post, BTB shared how used cooking oil can choke and clog sewers when it's not disposed of properly, contributing to flooding and harming aquatic and marine life when it reaches natural water reserves.

Meanwhile, coffee grounds left to decompose in land fills, can contribute to methane emissions, which contributes to climate change.

Disposing of them properly, and using them in a circular manner can help in waste and resource management.

RMC Oil and Ecosolutions is a DENR-accredited waste management company that's focused on collecting and transporting used cooking oil, waste coffee grounds, and other recyclable waste materials. They transport waste materials to sustainable energy plants to be used as raw materials for finished products. "We strictly follow IATF as well as DENR rules and protocols," it said.

Meanwhile, BTB Ecostore is a general store that promotes sustainability. It has refill stations for various household items including coffee, nuts, pasta, detergent, soap, and more. Customers are encouraged to come in with the reusables to avoid single-use plastics.
