'Red Rising' is getting a movie adaptation by 'Hunger Games' director
A movie adaptation of the popular “Red Rising” book series is in the works!
According to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has acquired the rights to author Pierce Brown's book series, with a film planned based on the first novel, published in 2014.
“The Hunger Games” director Francis Lawrence is set to direct the upcoming film.
Justin Rhodes will write the screenplay, while Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy will produce for About.Blank alongside Francesco Goedhuis. Brown will serve as executive producer.
Set in a dystopian science fiction future, “Red Rising” follows a society divided into a color-coded caste system across colonized planets.
The story centers on Darrow, a member of the impoverished Red caste who works in the mines of Mars. After suffering a devastating loss, he becomes involved in a rebellion against the ruling Gold caste, which dominates society and controls the solar system. Darrow undergoes a brutal transformation to infiltrate the Golds and enrolls in a military academy, where he must compete against other young members of the ruling class.
The book series currently consists of six novels: “Red Rising,” “Golden Son,” “Morning Star,” “Iron Gold,” “Dark Age,” and “Light Bringer.” A seventh and final installment, “Red God,” is also in the works.
Lawrence is no stranger to adapting popular young adult book franchises for the big screen. He directed all the films in “The Hunger Games” franchise, including the prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (2023) and the upcoming “Sunrise on the Reaping.”
He also directed “The Long Walk,” the 2025 film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.
