5 things Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant would like you to know about 'Santa Clarita Diet'

Hollywood stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were in the Philippines to promote the bloody return of Netflix original "Santa Clarita Diet".

In a roundtable interview with the press on Monday, Drew and Timothy revealed some things about the series we might not know about — things that go on behind-the-scenes, how it feels to eat fake human bodies, be drenched in blood, and what they love about their own show.

"Santa Clarita Diet" tells the story of a suburban couple Shiela and Joel Hammond who work as realtors in Santa Clarita. Their lives get turned upside down when Shiela throws up loads of bile and a strange red ball, which then turned her into someone who has better sex drive, more energy, a brand new personality and a thirst for human flesh.

In the upcoming season the Hammonds will go through a crazier roller coaster ride as they search for the cause of Shiela's "undead" situation.

1. How they bear the grossness

Says Timothy, it helps that the scenes are constantly hilarious. “You get used to it. We talked about this, some of the scenes we shot, when we shot them, they were so funny. I was very doubtful if we were even getting the scenes right — if it was phony, or touchy. When I watch the cut, I get shocked with how bloody it was, as if I didn’t even notice it the whole time I was shooting. We have scenes where we’re covered in blood, but they’re so lovely and so sweet and tender, so when I see it, I was like, how did I miss that?”

2. The fake human bodies taste horrible

According to Drew, the fake human bodies she eats for show taste horrible. “They look so real, because they’re made so well, but they taste so horrible. I have to sell that it’s the best thing I’ve ever eaten. I wish it was like an In-N-Out Burger or pizza but it tastes fermented. It’s pretty gross.”

By the way, Drew turns vegan when she’s shooting for the show. “I’m actually vegan when I’m doing the show so I lose like 20 pounds. As soon as the show’s over, I’ll eat pizza, and pasta, and hamburgers, and gain it all back.”

3. Drew came into the show after the loss of a marriage

Given how Timothy’s character Joel stood by his wife, Shiela after she turned undead, the Hammonds’ relationship in the series is evidently unshakable.

With the shift in their lifestyle and marriage in the show after Shiela's new state, the stars were asked what radical changes they had to go through in their personal marriages and life.

"My shift killed me," Shiela answered jokingly with the intent to double it down to her "undead" character and her previous divorce in real life.

"Entering this show after the loss of a marriage that I thought would last forever, I was happy to engage in a show where couples do make it work because we all know how difficult it is," she said.

She said relationship failure is not something she would want to personally watch on screen.

"The last thing I can ever imagine wanting to sit around and watch a show about divorce. That is just not how I wanna spend free time after having gone through that, so I was into Joel and Shiela's capability. It's like I want to believe and focus on like the functionality and the dysfuncionality," she said.

She continued, " I like the optimism of a couple who can make it through stuff, I appreciate that I don't want to see couples fight on TV, there's enough of that in real life, no thank you."

4. The cast clicked with each other quickly and now, they’re all friends

"We found the sweet spot and like around 3 or 4 episodes in. This year we just hit the ground running, I think there's also creatively, I don't know what your experience was like as viewer but it's nice when there's less set u. You just know who these people are, you understand them, you invest in your relationship, it just feels like you're sucked right in," Timothy said.

"There's sometimes a fun thing that happens when everybody comes back, they kind of uhm there's no defenses," he continued.

Drew said she loved the bond they have formed with their younger co-stars Skyler Gisondo who plays Eric and Liv Hewson who plays Abby, Shiela and Joel's daughter.

"We're really close the 4 of us, and it's really important for the show. I liked the idea that there was this show  and Victor told me about sort of the future that they would really become like a unit and a team and I just think Skyler and Liv are so fun and hilarious and so talented, so like I took this picture of us, all of us coming back from a rehearsal, and you like look at some of our faces and we seem like a little foursome," Barrymore narrated.

But more than the friendship formed among her co-stars, Drew values the relationship she’s formed with show creator Victor Fresco.

"Victor our showrunner is someone who is so important to me and it's become such a beloved person to have to go to work with him everyday, and so I think there's like a joy and a belief and an effort to what we're doing that gives it that energy," she said.

5. Season 2 is bound to be a cliffhanger

Although the stars kept mum about season 2 to avoid spoilers, Drew gave something away:

"I'm also always obsessed with the last episode, I really want it to be something that might need you to come back for more, and I liked that last year it ended in a very odd and ambiguous tone, but this one I was like, that's more of a fun cliffhanger," she said. — LA, GMA News
