Gabbi Garcia upgrades scuba diving license, advocates for plastic-free seas
As a sea lover and now an advanced scuba diver, Gabbi Garcia laments the plight of the oceans.
"Last year, we went to a clean-up dive in Batangas as well and may ilan-ilan pa ring basura sa ilalim. Sa surface siyempre it's given marami talaga, and I feel like now is the time to reduce, reuse and recycle. It's really to watch your waste to avoid plastic kasi parang the future generation will suffer. Not only us, but our future kids," Gabbi said in an interview at the Keds' Ladies for Ladies event in Makati City.
Gabbi encourages people to make a change in their habits and stop using single-use plastics such as straws, cups and bags.
"Start small. Don't use your plastic straws; just get a metal straw or a bamboo straw," she said.
"There are so many eco bags nowadays, free pa siya minsan, so why not use it? Avoid using plastic cups, use a tumbler instead," she added.
Gabbi said it's best to start your advocacy at home.
"There are so many ways little ways on how we can contribute to Mother Earth and I feel like now is the perfect time to actually do it. There are a lot of movements, there are a lot of advocacies, but you can start in your own home by reducing everything," she said.
Gabbi is ecstatic to have experienced her deepest dive, to 120 feet, upgrading her scuba diving license from junior to advanced during a recent visit to Anilao, Batangas.
"That's my deepest dive so far and it's just so fulfilling," she said.
"I'm a fan of the sea. Mahilig ako sa dagat, mahilig ako sa beach, so I was with my dad and my dad was telling me it's such a fulfillment for me!"
Gabbi said she is planning to eventually upgrade her license to rescue diving.
"Ang next na kasi na kasi, the first one is junior open water and then you go to advanced and after that rescue diving na so I have plans naman pursuing that when I have the time," she said.
Gabbi followed her dad into scuba diving, which she has been doing since she was 11.
"My dad kasi he was a scuba diver. Ever since wala pa ako sa mundo he was already a scuba diver. So when he introduced me to scuba diving, parang I was so interested I wanted to try. I'm a very adventurous person, so I just went for it, me being a lover of the beach di ba and the sea," she shared. — BM, GMA News
