Many of us now have a lot of time on our hands to catch up on films and dramas due to the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon.

But at times like these, it’s also important to get some perspective on real-life issues.

We put together some life-changing and internationally-acclaimed "I-Witness" documentaries you can watch on GMA Public Affairs' YouTube channel.

1. Kidneys for Sale

 

In a community called "Isla Maliit" and "Isla Malaki" near Manila Bay, poverty has forced residents to sell their kidneys to earn income.

GMA News pillar Jessica Soho's heart-wrenching investigative story won the Philippines’ first George Foster Peabody Award.

2. Ambulansiyang de Paa

 

The isolation of a small sitio in Mindoro Oriental has led to the demise of many of its residents. To save their lives, patients have to be carried in a cradle to the nearest hospital on foot.

This 2009 documentary by Kara David won I-Witness' second Peabody.

3. Selda Inosente

 

Imagine being a mother behind bars.

Kara David's documentary, recipient of a UNICEF Child Rights Award, gives us a glimpse into the lives of female prisoners in the provincial jail in Laguna who await the exoneration of their cases with newborns on their breast.

4. Boy Pusit

 

Sandra Aguinaldo chronicles the everyday lives of a group of children in Masbate who juggle studies and work as squid fishers.

This documentary also won the Gold World Medal for Social Issues and Current Events at the 50th New York Festivals.

5. Buto’t Balat

 

In 2005, four out of 10 children in the Bicol region were considered malnourished.

Kara David went to Mercedes, Camarines Norte to find out how families managed to feed their children on a daily basis despite earning insufficient income.

The episode won the silver medal at the U.S. International Film & Video Festival.

6. Iskul Ko, No. 1!

 

Coming to class is difficult for students of Sindangan Elementary School, but that didn’t stop them from becoming one of the best-performing schools in the 2006 National Achievement Test.

Sandra Aguinaldo's documentary revealed how the school has been monitoring their students' performances. It won the silver screen award in the U.S. International Film & Video Festival.

7. Busal

 

As the number of extra-judicial killings (EJKs) under President Duterte’s vicious war on drugs continued to rise, several “muzzled” individuals struggle to be heard.

This 2016 documentary by Howie Severino won the Gold Camera Award at the U.S. International Film and Video Festival.

8. Silang Kinalimutan

 

Atom Araullo gets to know some Rohingya refugees in Bangaldesh who fled from the crisis in their motherland.

The documentary, which was Atom's first story for "I-Witness," won a gold medal at the U.S. International Film & Video Festival.
