Vacant lot in Quezon City transformed into a community garden

A vacant lot in Novaliches, Quezon City has been transformed into a community garden amid the quarantine period after being neglected for almost two decades.

JC Tejano, one of the members of the community, said people from his neighborhood decided to remove all the trash and metal scraps piled up on the vacant lot.

When everything was cleared, they started to plow the soil and plant on the ground in April.

In May, they started to see the plants grow where people from their community get fresh ingredients for their vegetable dishes.

According to JC, among the vegetables planted on the garden are  sitaw, ampalaya, upo, patola, okra, kamatis, sili, talong, labanos, mustasa, bawang, sibuyas, luya, petsay, litsugas, kangkong, kamote, gabi, mani, malunggay, papaya, and avocado.

The Department of Agriculture has encouraged Filipinos to grow vegetables under their Plant, Plant, Plant program. They give away seeds and seedlings so people can practice urban gardening.
