Here's a first look at 'Raya and the Last Dragon,' Disney's first film inspired by Southeast Asia


We finally get a peek at Disney's first Southeast Asian princess!

Walt Disney Animation Studios just released a production still of upcoming animated film "Raya and the Last Dragon."

While she had her back turned, Raya clearly looks like a badass warrior with her red cape, hat, and sword. Beside her stood her trusty steed Tuk Tuk.

The story will take place in the fantasy world of Kumandra, where humans and dragons used to live together in harmony. When sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the last dragon in order to finally stop the Druun for good.

According to a report on Entertainment Weekly, cultures that influenced the movie included the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

It was also revealed that Kelly Marie Tran will voice Raya, joining Awkwafina as the voice of the dragon, Sisu.

The film is directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada are directing, with Paul Briggs and John Ripa co-directing. Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho are the producers, and Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim are writers on the project. 

"Raya and the Last Dragon" is set to open in Philippine theaters in 2021. —JCB, GMA News
