'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' dethrones 'Spirited Away' in Japan box office —report

"Demon Slayer: Mugen Train" has dethroned Studio Ghibli classic "Spirited Away" as Japan's no. 1 film in the box office.

According to Crunchyroll, "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train" has so far made 32,478,895,850 yen ($313,513,909) at the Japanese box office in 73 days.

The report said "Mugen Train" was also the first film in Japanese to reach 32 billion yen ($309 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of over 24 million admissions.

"Spirited Away," however, still held the record for ticket sales at 24.28 million as of the report.

"Mugen Train" is the highest-grossing animated film of the year and the fifth in the global box office, just behind "Tenet."

"Demon Slayer" follows a young man who goes on a quest to fight human-eating demons and save his younger sister after tragedy befalls his family.

The television series adaptation produced by Ufotable has become a global hit since it first aired in Japan in 2019. —Margaret Claire Layug/MGP, GMA News
