Chris Evans is fighting misinformation, one video at a time

Captain America is fighting another villain, this time in the real world—that thing we call "fake news."

Chris Evans has started a civic engagement platform which gives American citizens a direct channel of communication with their elected officials.

Called A Starting Point, the video-based platform aims to create "a more informed electorate."

"It was born out of recognizing that we were living in this proliferation of misinformation—that it's really hard to have a political discussion with people because most people come into the table with their own set of facts and information," Evans said in a virtual press conference for Smart Communications Inc. on Monday.

"So it felt like the most intuitive way to rage against that would be getting the information from elected officials directly from themselves to the electorate so we have at least an understanding of who the people in office are and what they believe in," he added.

In the ASP website, elected officials address questions on economy, education, environment, government, health, immigration, international, and rights. Their answers are limited to two minutes.

Evans developed the project together with fellow American actor Mark Kassen and technology entrepreneur Joe Kiani.

Despite choosing video as the medium for ASP, Captain America encouraged others to "read more" not just about current events but also about what happened in the past.

"I think that it's easy for us to think that all the issues we're going through as a country and as a world really is somehow unique to this moment when the truth is when you read history you realize that a lot of these things tend to repeat," he said.

"And [by reading] you can get a lot of information to address not just what's going on but it also opens up your understanding and compassion."
