SM Entertainment, MGM to launch K-Pop contest to form NCT-Hollywood
American media company MGM Worldwide Television Group and South Korea’s SM Entertainment have teamed up to create a K-Pop competition series in the United States.
According to a Deadline report on Thursday, the media giants are developing a reality series to find the latest members of the group NCT.
The series, which will be based in the US, will look for talented male artists between ages 13 to 25. Should they be chosen, these young male artists will be sent to Seoul, South Korea, to attend a K-Pop bootcamp at the SM Campus.
Contestants will compete in terms of their dance skills, vocals, and styles, and the winners will earn a spot in the NCT team.
NCT is currently composed of 23 members who make up the sub-units NCT 127, NCT DREAM, and WayV.
“K-Pop is more than a genre of music; it’s a cultural phenomenon and we’re so excited to partner with the incredible Soo-Man Lee and the team at SM to bring K-Pop to the US,” said MGM Worldwide Television group chairman Mark Burnett.
“We aim to help the contestants show their unlimited potential in becoming true artists. I hope the audience enjoys watching the journey of new stars being born in Hollywood, that will be promoted as NCT-Hollywood in the global market in the future,” said SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo Man.
SM Entertainment is the media company behind renowned K-pop groups Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, EXO, and Red Velvet, while MGM has produced audition shows such as “The Voice” and “Survivor.”
According to SM Entertainment, the new audition show will be launched this year. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
