Love bicycles? Kuya Kim shares how balance is achieved on a bike and more fun facts

How do people riding bicycles maintain their balance and not fall over?

As seen on "24 Oras" on Tuesday, Kuya Kim explained the science behind it while riding a bike himself.

According to Kuya Kim, when the wheels of a bike go around, it creates a momentum to shift the center of gravity upright. This is how balance can be achieved while riding a bike.

He also mentioned more bicycle facts and trivia. He said that a German inventor named Karl von Drais has been credited with developing the first bicycle.

His machine was called a swiftwalker. It had a wooden frame and two wheels made from wood but no pedal. In order to operate the swiftwalker, the rider had to walk while riding it.

In the mid-1800s, velocipedes were developed. These were bicycles that had pedals attached to the front wheels.

Fast forward a bit to the late 1800s, the wooden bicycle frames were now constructed with steel tubing instead. The steel was more durable but more heavy as well.

As a result, most of the bicycles back then weighed more than 36 kilos.

In 1898, Mikael Pedersen, a Danish inventor, made the first reported tandem bicycle that two people can use. It's known as the Pedersen bicycle.

The tandem bikes are not only used for recreation but also for sporting competitions like the Paralympics, which is the Olympics for persons with physical disabilities like the blind or the visually impaired. They can ride with someone at the competition.
