Grand, multi-level, and Union Jack-inspired stage teased for Coronation Concert
A grand stage is being set up for the Coronation Concert on May 7.
The East Terrace of Windsor Castle will host a live concert for the first time. It will be seen in over 100 countries and attended by 20,000 members of the public from across the UK.
As seen in new rendered images from producers BBC Studios Productions, the stage is set with the parapet wall steps in the middle.
It also boasts multiple levels for the 70-piece orchestra and band, and the shape is based on the form of the Union Jack.
“Four additional catwalks branch out of the flag geometry from the stage into the crowd to create more areas for performers and choreography,” BBC Studios said on Instagram. “The main stage sits in front of the orchestra with a direct backdrop of the world famous site.”
The photos also show a circular LED screen on top, as well as bright, colorful lights.
The Coronation Concert will be hosted by Hugh Bonneville. The night’s performers are Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Nicole Scherzinger, Olly Murs, Take That, Tiwa Savage, Andrea Bocelli, Paloma Faith, Lang Lang, Pete Tong, Steve Winwood, Vula Malinga, Jerub, Sir Bryn Terfel, Freya Ridings, Alexis Ffrench, and Lucy.
Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor will deliver a spoken word performance.
The Royal Ballet, The Royal Opera, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal College of Music, and The Royal College of Art will also come together for the first time. Their performance will feature Ncuti Gatwa and Mei Mac.
Tom Cruise, Dame Joan Collins, Bear Grylls, and Sir Tom Jones will be appearing via video message.
On Saturday, May 6, King Charles III will be crowned in a ceremony at the Westminster Cathedral in London. It will be the first coronation in England in 70 years, since Queen Elizabeth II’s in 1953.
The ceremony will be livestreamed for free at the QC Circle.
