What's the difference between a zipline and a tramline? Kuya Kim explains
Perhaps you've seen a zipline, but what about a tramline? A tramline is a type of aerial lift.
As seen on Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Tuesday, it's a transport system in which the cabin, car, gondola, or open chair is suspended in the air in between cables that are connected to opposing posts, similar to a zipline.
However, a zipline was created for recreational purposes and hinges on a cable that's suspended and on an incline. It also has a pulley and harness for the protection of the passenger.
Locally, there's a tramline that's anchored by an old jeep at the base of the cables in Barangay Buscalan in Tinglayan in Kalinga. That's why they call it a jeepline.
"At first naghe-hesitate kami kasi mukha siyang hindi safe. Pero ‘yong tour guide namin, siya muna daw sasakay. Doon kami nag-decide sakay na rin kami. May tali roon na pwede mong hawakan. Pero aside from that wala siyang safety gear. Ang mayroon ka lang talaga guts at tapang lang talaga," said a tourist who went by the name Edward.
"Sulit siya kasi napakaganda. Makikita mo 'yung nature along the way," he added.
However, according to the local government of Buscalan, people aren't allowed to ride the jeepline anymore.
"Hindi pang tao 'yan. Sasabihin namin sa barangay captain at sa mga tao roon na dapat hindi gagamitin sa mga tao," said Johnny Tinggangay, tourism officer for the Municipality of Tinglayan, Kalinga.
"Hindi po namin papayagan ang pagsakay ng tao. 'Pag sakay ng tao at may aksidente, puwedeng kakasuhan ang operator," said Barangay Captain of Barangay Buscalan Leon Baydon.
Looking back through history, one of the first trams that people rode was the Taikoo Cable Car or Taikoo Ropeway, a cable car system in Hong Kong that operated from 1891 to 1932.
The Taikoo Cable Car has a length of 2.3 kilometers and is one of the first tram lines that was put up so that passengers can ride it.
Before that, aerial trams were utilized more to carry cargo. A Croatian Polymath named Fausto Veranzio did the very first design of an aerial lift.
As for the first operational aerial tram, that was made by Adam Wybe in Gdansk City, Poland in 1644. It moved via four horses and was used to transport soil.
In the early 20th century, people used the tramway for the mines in North and South America. It was used to transport ore, a natural rock that contains one or more valuable minerals.
