'Insidious: The Red Door' posts biggest opening weekend in PH cinemas this year

"Insidious: The Red Door" just broke the record for the biggest opening weekend in Philippine cinemas this year after its release on July 5.

According to Columbia Pictures, the film's local distributor, "The Red Door" earned P205.6 million in five days after being shown on 542 screens in 206 locations.

This is also the biggest opening weekend of horror films all-time in the country, beating previous "Insidious" films, "The Conjuring," "IT," "Annabelle: Creation," as well as local titles "Deleter and "Feng Shui."

"The film was poised to open well, but we were just blown away by how much the horror fans embraced this, the franchise's final chapter," said Christopher Sy, managing director of Columbia Pictures. "It's like the biggest, most enthusiastic send-off party to a beloved friend."

Theaters also scheduled midnight screenings for the horror fans.

"I think the fans wanted to experience the movie with other people, to get scared together, to scream together, in a shared environment," Sy said.  "And this can only be possible inside a cinema – in the dark, with a giant screen, and the best sound."

Starring Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, and Rose Bryne, "Insidious: The Red Door" concludes the epic saga of the Lambert family.

Wilson also directed the film.
