First time at Masungi Georeserve? Try the beginner-friendly Sunrise Trail

If you're just beginning your hiking journey, there's no better place to start than the Sunrise Trail at Masungi Georeserve in Rizal.

Nestled in the lush landscape of Baras, Masungi Georeserve is a protected conservation area and eco-tourism destination known for its breathtaking views and unique limestone formations. Home to over 400 species of flora and fauna, the area is teeming with life, including birds, monkeys, lizards, snakes, and even the rare Jurassic Plant, which grows only in parts of Luzon.

The Sunrise Trail is a beginner-friendly hike that takes under three hours to complete. Since it begins in the early morning, you can enjoy the cool breeze and soft sunlight without worrying about harsh heat or sunburn.

If you're planning your first hike or just looking for a scenic escape close to the city, here are some things you can expect from the Sunrise Trail at Masungi Georeserve.

Friendly tour guide

A forest ranger will guide you on your way to the summit. Not only are they friendly and engaging, but they also share fascinating facts and insights about the diverse flora and fauna along the trail.

Moderate to challenging terrain

The Sunrise Trail takes you through over 600 carved stone steps, winding past ancient limestone formations and lush secondary forests.

While most of the terrain is moderate and suitable for beginners, certain sections can be more challenging due to steep inclines and moss-covered, slippery paths.

Scenic view

The 600-step route culminates at the summit, where hikers are greeted by a sea of clouds, a golden sunrise, a crisp mountain breeze, and a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of Laguna de Bay and the Sierra Madre mountain range.

While enjoying the view, hikers are treated to fresh fruits and hot chocolate, a perfect way to start the morning.

Rich fauna and flora

Aside from the panoramic views and striking rock formations, hikers will also encounter the rich diversity of flora and fauna that the georeserve has to offer, with some species found only in this forest.

Along the way to the summit, hikers may spot creatures such as snails, birds, and hammerhead worms, as well as a variety of plant life including mushrooms and wild begonias.

Filipino breakfast

At the end of the almost three-hour trail, the hikers will be served with a traditional Filipino breakfast such as their signature ube champorado and arrozcaldo, paired with hot cocoa or herbed tea. 

The Sunrise Trail is a rain-or-shine experience available from Tuesday to Sunday. For a conservation fee of P1,500, guests receive full access to the trail, a park ranger guide, and complimentary light snacks and refreshments upon completion.
