Netflix, MAPPA announce 'expanded partnership'; new anime projects now in the works

Netflix and anime powerhouse MAPPA has expanded their partnership, with the goal of producing new projects for the global stage.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Netflix said it will exclusively stream new and original MAPPA productions to its users worldwide. Multiple anime projects are now in the planning and production stage.

MAPPA, which is behind hit anime series "Jujutsu Kaisen" and "Chainsaw Man," said the move is based on its "core belief in being an independent studio — both creatively and in business."

"Japanese animation studios must proactively lead every stage, from understanding global audience needs and developing projects, to reaching viewers and expanding related businesses. MAPPA is committed to deepening our collaboration with Netflix, aiming for a long-term, win-win partnership," said MAPPA CEO and president Manabu Otsuka.

Netflix said that its anime viewership has tripled over the past five years.

"By combining MAPPA’s unique approach to anime production with Netflix’s global reach — and the courage to take risks, which is essential to creating compelling content — we hope to further expand the possibilities of anime. We are fully committed to delivering new works and excitement to fans around the world," Kaata Sakamoto, vice president of Content - Japan at Netflix, said.

MAPPA productions currently available on Netflix include "Jujutsu Kaisen," "Chainsaw Man," "Ranma1/2," and "Kakegurui Twin."

The final season of "Attack on Titan" was also produced by MAPPA, as well as the classic "Banana Fish." —JCB, GMA Integrated News
