'Baldur's Gate' live action series in the works at HBO

HBO is set to bring the world of "Baldur's Gate" to life!

According to Deadline, "The Last of Us" co-creator Craig Mazin will helm the live-action adaptation of Larian Studios' highly successful video game "Baldur's Gate 3" for HBO. The series will be a continuation of the game's story rather than a retelling of the entire franchise.

Mazin said his love for "Baldur's Gate 3" led to his decision to adapt it as a TV series. He told Deadline that not only has he beat the game on Honor Mode, he is also a longtime fan of Dungeons & Dragons, which is what the game is based on.

"After putting nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of 'Baldur's Gate 3,' it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created," Mazin said.

"I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property," he added.

According to the report, the upcoming TV series will feature beloved characters of "Baldur's Gate 3" as well as new ones, "some of them heroes, some of them villains, some of them literally devils."

"Baldur's Gate 3," released in 2023, is the third and largest installment in Larian Studios' "Baldur's Gate" series.

The story follows the party — composed of the player, the vampire spawn Astarion, the wizard Gale, the cleric Shadowheart, the githyanki Lae'zel, the warlock Wyll, and the tiefling Karlach — as they search for a cure for the tadpole in their brains that threatens to turn them into illithids, also known as mind flayers. Together, they make their way across Faerûn to the city of Baldur's Gate.

The game won a number of awards, including Game of the Year at the Game Awards 2023—JCB, GMA Integrated News
