‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ animator slams movie leak

One of the animators of “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” took to social media to speak out after the film was leaked online, calling the situation “incredibly disrespectful” to the artists who worked on it.

The upcoming animated film is facing controversy after its full version began circulating on X (formerly Twitter) ahead of its official release on Paramount+.

Julia Schoel said the leak has been disheartening for the team, who spent years bringing the project to life with the expectation of celebrating it in theaters.

“We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation that’d we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters.. just to see  people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy,” she wrote.

She also pushed back against fans using Paramount’s decision to pull the film from theatrical release as justification for spreading the leaked version.

“Don’t like seeing people use Paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount+. But pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in,” she said.

In a follow-up exchange with a user, Schoel explained that leaks before release can significantly harm a project at its most critical stage, as it bypasses marketing buildup, premieres, and official distribution, factors that help shape a film’s reception and future opportunities for its creators.

“Pirating on the other hand, happens after the film has already had the chance to reach audiences through official channels, and does not harm its reputation,” she said.

Paramount+ is set to release “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” later this year.

The movie follows Avatar Aang, the world’s last Airbender, who discovers an ancient power capable of preserving his people’s legacy from extinction. It will follow Aang and his friends’ journey to secure it first, racing against those who would use it for destructive purposes and threaten the fragile peace that has been hard-won.
