'Mortal Kombat II': Original creator Ed Boon says sequel film has 'a hundred easter eggs'

"Mortal Kombat II" is going to be a treat for fans of the original games, creator Ed Boon promises.

During the virtual press conference for the upcoming film, Boon, who co-created the video game series with John Tobias, said that the cast and crew "expand everything in all three dimensions."

"These characters that we thought of are now represented are now represented by amazing actors who just really brought their own flair to it," he said. "To me that's the most exciting things, seeing their interpretations of these characters."

He praised director Simon McQuoid, saying he "did something really clever."

"If you're a fan of the games, you will go crazy when you see what's on there," Boon said.

"Littered throughout the film are a hundred easter eggs," he added.

Boon went on to say that he thinks a lot of people are going to watch the film multiple times.

"I bet you there's gonna be a list somewhere," he said.

"To me it's such a service to people who are fans of the games," he added.

For his part, McQuoid said they were sure to really dig deep into the "Mortal Kombat" lore.

"It was just a constant process of looking at the decades of lore that Ed and his guys have created, and constantly mining that and seeing what we could use and seeing how we could fold it and layer it into the film and the story," he said.

"We wanted it to have an emotional impact, we wanted it to mean something, not just, 'Oh that looks cool,'" he added.

The sequel to the live-action film "Mortal Kombat" released in 2021, "Mortal Kombat II" centers on Johnny Cage, portrayed by Karl Urban.

In the trailer, Cage is introduced as a has-been actor chosen to fight at a deadly tournament alongside other champions.

The film follows the champions as they attempt to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
