Meccha Chameleon: In the viral new game, survival depends on your painting skills
A new multiplayer game is getting attention for turning hide-and-seek into a colorful challenge.
Released on June 9, Meccha Chameleon introduces a new twist to the classic childhood game: instead of simply finding a hiding spot, players must use their painting skills to become part of the stage.
The gameplay
The game divides players into two teams: Seekers and Hiders.
The Seekers’ goal is simple: find all the Hiders before time runs out. Meanwhile, the Hiders must avoid detection by using the game’s main feature: painting their characters to match their surroundings.
Players start with a pure white body and can customize their appearance by painting themselves to mimic different parts of the stage. The better they blend in, the harder they are to spot.
According to the game’s Steam description, survival depends on three things: the hiding spot, the pose, and artistic skill. Players are encouraged to create disguises that can fool the opposing team, similar to how a real chameleon adapts to its environment.
Indie success
On Friday, Meccha Chameleon reached 10 million sales.
It's a massive achievement for a casual multiplayer game created by only two people: Japanese indie game developers Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro.
Since its release, Meccha Chameleon has received a positive response from players. As of this writing, 88% of 15,897 Steam user reviews are positive, showing strong interest from the gaming community.
The indie game has attracted players because of its funny and unpredictable moments. A poorly matched paint job, a suspicious pose, or a creative disguise can easily turn into a memorable game clip, making it a natural fit for streaming and online content.
Meccha Chameleon supports both public matches and streaming, allowing players to create open servers where others can join. Streamers can also host viewer participation games, adding another layer of interaction.
The game recommends two to 10 players, although the actual player count may vary depending on the host’s network environment and future updates.
Meccha Chameleon is currently priced at P205 on Steam. —JCB, GMA News
