Sony to stop releasing PlayStation games on discs
Sony will stop releasing PlayStation games on physical discs starting January 2028.
According to the PlayStation blog, this is because consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry are shifting to digital.
New games will still be bought through the PlayStation Store and at retailers, but in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games already released or to be released before January 2028.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” Sony said.
“This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” the gaming giant added.
Sony said they will continue to prioritize their resources in how players could access and purchase new games.
“We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support,” Sony said.
This announcement comes after highly anticipated game “Grand Theft Auto VI” was revealed to only have download codes instead of a physical disc. —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA News
