'Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory' Netflix animated film sets November 2027 release

A new animated adventure from the world of Willy Wonka is coming to theaters in 2027.

Netflix announced that “Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory” will open globally in theaters on November 5, 2027, before arriving on Netflix on December 22, 2027.

The upcoming animated film will put a fresh spin on Roald Dahl’s beloved “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” universe, with Kit Connor voicing a brand-new character, Charlie Paley, and Taika Waititi lending his voice to the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka.

“I’m so excited to enter the wonderful world of Wonka. I was immediately caught by the early concept art and the directors’ vision for the film — capturing the spirit and heart that made the original story so special, whilst imbuing it with something so fresh and unique,” Kit said.

“[Willy Wonka] is so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic, eccentric candy genius — if a little mischievous at times — is hugely exciting,” Taika said.

Set in modern-day London, the story follows teenager Charlie Paley and his friends as they face eviction from their homes. They hatch a plan to break into Wonka’s factory, steal a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes.

Their plan, however, puts them face-to-face with Wonka, who has returned to his factory after serving time in prison for turning a child into a blueberry.

Directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, the film will also feature the voices of Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet, and Helena Bonham Carter. —Carby Rose Basina/CDC, GMA News
