Sunnies Studios introduces first sunglasses collection made with biodegradable materials

It's about time more brands switch to using biodegradable and sustainable materials and become more active participants in taking care of the environment!

For eyewear brand Sunnies Studios, 2022 is all about committing to a more sustainable future. And right on time for Earth Day, it unveiled its first collection of eyewear responsibly made with biodegradable acetate or recycled polyester.

Biodegradable acetate is made when natural materials are turned into usable acetate through organic plasticizers. With reduced fossil carbon content, it returns to the earth clean.

On the other hand, recycled polyester allows Sunnies Studios to get on with the circular economy. Recycling polyester into new items helps keep existing plastics out of landmines and oceans. It also minimizes carbon emissions, too.

The biodegradable acetate frames are available in Alba in Bone, Bobbi in Classic Tort, Rio in Dark Wheat, and Wolf in Black.

The BPA-free recycled polyester frames meanwhile are available in Alba in Ink and Cantaloupe, Bobbi in Ink and Taupe, Rio in Truffle and Ink, and Wolf in Taupe and Cantaloupe.

Sunnies Studios operations director Bea Soriano-Dee told GMA News Online that they pushed this initiative because they "want to continue building Sunnies Inc. responsibly."

"Being in the retail industry, we recognize that it starts with our products. As we continue to create good stuff that people love, we wanted to take care of our environmental footprint," Bea added.

The operations director also noted that Sunnies is "consistently making improvements where we can to reflect our stand in what matters to our internal community and we are encouraging other retailers to do the same."

This change in the brand means there would be less fossil-based materials, minimized carbon footprint, and reduced plastic waste without compromising the quality of the products. A win-win situation, indeed, for both Sunnies Studios and Mother Earth!

According to Sunnies, 77% of its new developments are already made from responsible materials, as of this writing.

In the latest IPCC report — where for the first time it dedicated a whole chapter to solutions — it recommended a three-prong approach to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions: "avoid, shift, and improve."

"Avoid energy-intensive behavior, switch to low-carbon technologies and improve the efficiency of existing tech," it said.

Sunnies Studios' shift to using more responsible materials is definitely a big win for Mother Earth. Here's hoping more brands follow suit and make the switch — or avoid or improve their processes — not only for Mother Earth but for our future. — LA, GMA News
