British designer Anya Hindmarch launches PH-exclusive recycled tote bag
British designer Any Hindmarch is bringing her Universal Tote Bag initiative from the United Kingdom to the Philippines.
Created in partnership with The Marketplace, the Philippines-exclusive shopping bag is made from 100% recycled plastic and is designed to encourage long-term reuse.
Hindmarch launched the Universal Tote Bag project in 2021 and claimed to have saved “over 330 tonnes of virgin plastic from landfill.”
“Plastic pollution remains a pressing environmental issue, but working together with major global food retailers shows how the solution needs to be collaborative,” she said in a press release.
In 2019, the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) audited that almost 48 million shopping bags were used throughout the Philippines, totaling more than 17 billion annually.
Aside from shopping bags, the GAIA report also cited that around 16.5 billion “labo” bags are used per year across the country.
The figures are based on 21 waste assessments conducted in six cities and seven municipalities across the Philippines, with the national figures produced by extrapolating from local results.
To produce the Universal Tote Bag, Hindmarch collaborated with The Solent Group, a United Kingdom-based reusable-bag manufacturer. Each bag is made from 100% recycled plastic, with materials and processes certified under the Global Recycling Standard.
The Universal Tote Bag is available exclusively at The Marketplace stores nationwide. The small size retails for P699, while the regular size is priced at P899.
