Fashion design Jor-el Espina gives modern Filipiniana a colorful makeover in new collection called Dekada

The Modern Filipiniana get a fresh look in Dekada, a collection that blends heritage-inspired design with bold colors, handcrafted details, and contemporary silhouettes.

Designed by Jor-el Espina, Dekada reflects both his creative evolution and his signature take on modern Filipino fashion.

“For Dekada, I was thinking of a diverse audience with varying sensibilities and preferences," Espina said in a statement. "There is something for everyone–reimagined hero pieces as well as newer designs and one-of-a-kind pieces. The goal was to let my clients and patrons know that they are seen and heard,” he added.

Dekada has Espina reimagining staples like the Barong Tagalog, terno, and tapis into crop tops, wide-leg trousers, flared skirts, coordinated separates, and layering pieces.

A defining feature of the collection is its mix of materials. Handwoven local textiles are paired with piña fabric, organza, lace, and even denim, creating striking contrasts in texture while highlighting the richness of Filipino weaving traditions.

The garments are further brought to life through traditional embroidery, beadwork, three-dimensional floral appliqués, tassels, and layered add texture and individuality.

“Yes, it is retail, but I always infuse my pieces with details that make it special or hark back to elements of couture. Details really tell the story. No two pieces are exactly alike because they are all made or guided by hand,” Espina said.

Known for his simple and elegant Filipiniana aesthetic, the designer has introduced playful design accents in the collection, including colorful safety pins, bright stripes, and bold color blocking that appear alongside neutral tones.

“I have been collecting these pins for years and decided to add to them my pieces in a way that is fun and completely unexpected,” he said.

According to Espina, the collection reflects his desire to create pieces for different personalities and lifestyles while continuing to explore new ideas in Filipino fashion.

“I always feel like I'm starting all over again—discovering and experimenting, improving and learning. Over the years, I've always believed that there is always room for growth and to never be complacent,” he said.

The “Dekada” collection will be available exclusively at ArteFino: Isang Dekada pop-up, happening July 30 to August 2 at the ArteFino Atelier on The Fifth in Power Plant Mall.

In 2020, Espina launched a collection of tote bags and face masks inspired by the Barong Tagalog. — LA, GMA News
