At Baguio’s Panagbenga Festival, flowers do not just hang from shop windows and ceilings, nor merely adorn the elaborate floats of the Grand Parade, which will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23.

Rather, it could be said that this is the time of year when flowers come alive.

This was especially true at the Street Dance Competition winding through Session Road on the morning of Feb. 22.

Between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., elementary and high school students from several schools in the district—including the Bagio Special Education students—danced, spun, and wriggled as sunflowers, roses, and flowers of all sizes and colors.

Some dressed as leaves beat together sticks, while others were bumblebees or butterflies. There were twirling umbrellas done up as flowers or shimmering with rain-beads.

A few donned the traditional garments, played the instruments, and danced the dances of the indigenous peoples of the region.

The lyre-players and drummers were all dressed up as well—even their instruments were in bloom.

If the spectacle was this great during the street dance competition, what more the floats for the Grand Parade? — DVM/BM, GMA News
