Yay? NAIA now only world’s 4th worst airport – report

The good news: The Ninoy Aquino International Airport is no longer the worst airport in the world.

The bad news: It's still one of the top five worst airports in the world.

The Philippines' prime gateway has been bumped off the number one spot of The Guide to Sleeping in Airports' worst airports survey by Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad, Pakistan after three straight years of being on top.

Here are the world's worst airports according to the survey:

1. Islamabad Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Pakistan

2. Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport, Saudi Arabia

3. Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal

4. Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Philippines

5. Tashkent International Airport, Uzbekistan

6. Paris Beauvais - Tille International Airport, France; tied with (7) Frankfurt Hahn International Airport, Germany

8. Bergamo Orio al Serio International Airport, Italy

9. Berlin Tegel International Airport, Germany

10. New York City LaGuardia International Airport, US.

The survey was conducted from September 2013 to August 2014 and is based on "travelers' overall airport experience," the blog said.

"Manila NAIA saw a slight 'improvement' in its ranking as a result of increased positive votes for its Terminal 3," it added.

The blog post noted respondents' continuing complaints about NAIA, including overcrowding, lengthy queues, limited seating, smelly toilets, and unfriendly immigration and customs officers.

It also said that Terminal 1 became "Asia's largest public sauna" last April after its air-conditioning broke down, with the replacement of its air handling units only begun months later.

As for the improvements, the blog noted that the terminal tax has been included on international tickets, "further decongesting the terminal by reducing at least one lengthy queue."

It also said that some international airlines' operations were moved to Terminal 3, easing the congestion in Terminal 1.

"Consider this a firm recommendation to do all that you can to fly on airlines that use Terminal 3 rather than Terminal 1," it said.

The best airports

The blog also released its list of the top 10 best airports in the world, citing their excellence in comfort, amenities, cleanliness, and customer service.
