A specially commissioned bronze commemorative plaque will formalize the status of Vigan City in Ilocos Sur as one of the world's New7Wonders Cities.

Vigan will be the first of the New7Wonders Cities to be officially inaugurated, the New7Wonders.com site said.

"Established in the 16th century, its architecture echoes the fusion of cultural elements from the Philippines, China and Europe, creating a city that is without equal in Asia," it said.

It also described Vigan as "the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia."

The New7Wonders.com site said the plaque, cast at the famous Kunstgießerei München foundry in Germany, is to be unveiled at an inauguration ceremony.

While it said the ceremony is on May 6, Wednesday, the Vigan for New7Wonders Cities Facebook page said the inauguration would be on May 7, Thursday.

It is at the Kunstgießerei München where "metal becomes memory using a combination of art and craft that dates back to ancient times," it said.

“By following this sequence of steps, the cast plaque gets its colours and is brought to life,” said Bernard Weber, founder-president of New7Wonders.

Other than Vigan, the New7Wonders Cities are:
  • Beirut, Lebanon
  • Doha, Qatar
  • Durban, South Africa
  • Havana, Cuba
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • La Paz, Bolivia
