Matteo Guidicelli talks about ‘mind-blowing’ first visit to West Philippine Sea for ‘Philippine Defenders’
Matteo Guidicelli had the chance to visit the West Philippine Sea for the first time for his upcoming documentary, “Philippine Defenders.”
In a virtual media interview on Wednesday, the Kapuso star described his firsthand experience as “mind-blowing.”
“It's very difficult to believe na these large Chinese vessels are slowly creeping up in our shores and our men and women in uniform are there establishing their presence," Matteo said.
"They need more exposure. Kawawa din sila,” he adds.He emphasized the critical need for this area and the soldiers stationed there to receive more importance and attention.
“Kung nakikita mo kung anong mga supplies na meron sila, kung anong ginagawa nila, talagang kailangan—it has to be given more importance,” he said.
Matteo added that it was “enlightening” for him to see the situation of the people there.
“Nung pumunta kami doon, ‘yung mga locals doon, you know, they still had the Filipino spirit. ‘Yung talagang kahit kahit saan mo ilagay, may smile pa rin sa mukha. Alam mo ‘yun? That's the Filipino spirit,” he said.
Matteo hopes that “Philippine Defenders” will encourage the public to discuss the West Philippine Sea issue more actively.
“Dahil iba eh, you know, if we don't give it attention, if we don't give it importance, talagang they're coming closer kumbaga,” he said.
According to program manager Sherilyn Bruan, the production team chose Matteo to host the project because his personal experience as a reservist provides unique insights and perspective, helping the story connect and resonate with the audience.
“Wala kaming ibang nakikita kung sino ang best na magho-host nito kundi si Matteo kasi as a reservist, iba ‘yung insights niya, iba ‘yung input niya, iba ‘yung texture at tsaka ‘yung kaniyang experience na na maiko-contribute to the story. Iba yung first hand na na experience na nashe-share din ni Matteo dito,” she said.
She added that “Philippine Defenders” will show Matteo’s big transition from being an actor to a reservist.
“Philippine Defenders” is a special documentary presented by GMA Public Affairs that aims to salute the true heroes of the nation: the soldiers who are ready to risk their lives for freedom.
The documentary features several facets of the Filipino military and their missions. It includes an aerial patrol aboard a military aircraft to identify the presence of Chinese vessels within Philippine territory, highlighting the escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
“Philippine Defenders” will air on GMA Network this Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
