GMA VP Annette Gozon-Valdes tackles impact of dramas, programs in PH tourism

GMA Network Senior Vice President Annette Gozon-Valdes on Wednesday highlighted the significance of dramas and other programs in promoting tourism at the launch of the Philippines' first-ever Creative Tourism Conference in Manila City.

Gozon-Valdes was one of the plenary speakers at the event's plenary session held at the Metropolitan Theatre, discussing the impact of storytelling on tourism promotion.

According to Gozon-Valdes, dramas are still the "highest rating shows on TV."

"These are the most exportable shows. So we can sell these shows to free TVs of other countries, other regions. Now that we have streaming platforms, we can also provide these materials later on, on streaming platforms and also on digital platforms like social media, YouTube, TikTok," she said.

"By doing so, we are not only able to reach the Filipino audience here… but also a global audience," she added.

In her presentation, she cited GMA shows such as Legal Wives, Inday Will Always Love You, Pulang Araw, and Maria Clara at Ibarra, which she said promotes heritage tourism.

"It bolsters national pride, cultural pride, and I think talagang nakakatulong ito sa pag-promote ng tourism sa bansa," Gozon-Valdes said in an interview.

(It bolsters national pride, cultural pride, and I think this really helps in promoting tourism in the country.)

Gozon-Valdes said that for tourism content to be embedded in storytelling, producers must include specific locations and samples of Filipino food into the narrative.

"Prino-promote po namin paano i-incorporate ang film, television, at mga influencers, mga creative directors, mga content creators sa tourism para nag-u-unite lahat ng creatives to promote the beauty of the Philippines," he said in an ambush interview.

(We are promoting how to incorporate people from film, television, and influencers, creative directors, content creators involved in tourism so that all creatives unite to promote the beauty of the Philippines.)

"'Yung masasabi kong napaka importante—, Kasi alam ko 'yung mga Pinoy, tama po sinasabi nila, napakaganda ng Pilipinas, napakatalento kaya may chance din tayo [gumawa] ng mark sa global world. And I'm excited because this is a very promising conference," he added.

(It's important to note that Filipinos—, they are right in saying that the Philippines is very beautiful, its people are very talented, so we also have a chance to make a mark in the global world. And I'm excited because this is a very promising conference.)

He also spoke excitedly about "Huwag Kang Titingin", an upcoming horror film featuring himself, as well as former housemates Shuvee Etrata, Charlie Fleming, Josh Ford, and other Sparkle artists.

Meanwhile, other panel speakers were VIU Philippines Head of Content Garlic Garcia and United Nations Women National Goodwill Ambassador Karen Davila, who emphasized the value of empowering women in tourism. Also in attendance was Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco.
