Palm Sunday parade in Palma de Mallorca

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain — Devotees of different confradia (or brotherhoods) donned traditional pointed hoods called capirote as they paraded through the streets of Palma in Mallorca, Spain, on Palm Sunday.

Local residents and tourists held palm branches and clapped as the confradia walked past in what is called the Processó de l’Entrada de Jesús a Jerusalem, depicting Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.

Costaleros are people who carry the paso, or the heavily adored floats on which the images stand. For the image of La Dolorosa (Our Lady of Sorrows), at least 30 people were hidden beneath the paso, moving slowly. Each paso weighs approximately 2,000 kg, and costaleros carry the wooden structure often on their shoulders or heads, in darkness.
