In Central Africa, an elephant reportedly kills hunter from California 

A hunter from California has been killed by an elephant during a hunting expedition in a forest in the Central African country of Gabon, multiple reports say. 

Ernie Dosio, a 75-year-old a big-game hunter was with two other hunters in the Lope-Okanda rainforest area, tracking a species of forest-dwelling antelope on April 17, when they stumbled on a small herd of female elephants with young calves, the New York Times reported after speaking with Dax McCarty, a friend of Dosio who received permission from Dosio's family to discuss what happened with the newspaper. 

According to McCarty, the hunting party had backed off but the herd charged to scare the hunters away.

When the animals charged again and got into about 25 yards, the elephants started attacking and injuring a member of the hunting party.

Dosio's uninjured companion "tried to get him to safety behind a tree but one of the elephants attacked again, fatally goring Mr. Dosio with her tusk," NYTimes continued.

"Mr. Dosio's remains are in Gabon awaiting repatriation," NYTimes said.

Citing the Daily Mail, The Guardian reports that safari operator Collect Africa confirmed the death of its client. "The company also reported that the professional hunter guiding Dosio sustained serious injuries during the encounter."

Dosio is a millionaire owner of a farm management company that works with wineries. He is a well-known and experienced big-game hunter from California, says SFGate.

Gabon boasts of a full aray of wildlife. Its forests are home to gorillaz, chimpanzees, and elephants.

According to the Wilfelife Conservation Society, up to 50,000 elephants traverse Gabon's dense forests. "Gabon is now the last stronghold for forest elephants in central Africa," it says on its website. — LA, GMA News
