Beyond tourism, Batanes in the northernmost tip of PHL is home of the Ivatans

With its breathtaking mountain views and one-of-a-kind scenery, Batanes continues to draw both local and international travelers.

As seen on Atom Araullo’s "State of the Nation" report, Batanes is a group of islands seemingly far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Located at the northernmost tip of the Philippines, it has become one of the country's most sought-after destinations for travelers.

But beyond its stunning landscapes, Batanes is first and foremost a province that the Ivatans proudly call home.

Floyd Noblejas, also known as Lawin of Batanes, is an Ivatan content creator who shares not only the province's beauty but also the lives of its people. He said he started creating videos after realizing that many people could not locate where Batanes was.

“Noong nag start ako mag-upload ng videos, maraming tao hindi nakakaalam kung saan ‘yung Batanes so mas na-enganyo ako ipakita kung ano bang meron sa Batanes,” he said.

“Also, kung ano bang klaseng mga tao ang meron sa Batanes,” he added.

Among Batanes' most popular attractions are Marlboro Hills, locally known as Racuh a Payaman, the Basco Lighthouse, and Morong Beach.

Marlboro Hills is known for its rolling green hills overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean. Another must-visit destination is the Basco Lighthouse, a historic landmark that also offers one of the province's most spectacular sunset views.

A trip to Batanes would not be complete without crossing to Sabtang Island, where visitors are welcomed by Morong Beach, known for its crystal-clear waters, white sand, and the iconic stone arch.

“Kilala namin kung sino kami,” Floyd said. “Mga proud na Ivatan kami.”

“Bilang Ivatan, Filipino kami. Hindi namin siya kinukuwestiyon sa sarili namin,” he added.

Earlier in July, the Philippines dismissed claims that Batanes belongs to China, saying the country's sovereignty over the province is "settled and not up for debate."

“The Philippines will not entertain revisionist claims over its territory and calls on so-called scholars to focus their energies on genuine, good-faith studies of the region,” the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The issue arose after reports that researchers from Chinese universities and institutes claimed that the Philippines' control over Batanes supposedly lacks a historical and legal basis.

The researchers argued that Batanes is a geographical extension of Taiwan and therefore falls under China's sovereignty. — Hermes Joy Tunac/LA, GMA News
