MPTC to raise pavements in NLEX San Simon segment to stop flooding

Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the owner and operator of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), said Tuesday it is working on measures to address recurring flooding along some segments of its tollway.

In a news release, the MPTC said it would raise the northbound and southbound pavements in Tulaoc, San Simon, Pampanga segment of NLEX once the Tulaoc Bridge elevation is completed as part of a "permanent solution" to perennial flooding in the area.

The toll roads operator also said it recognizes the difficulties faced by motorists affected by recent floods along the NLEX corridor as it committed to continue working with national and local agencies to speed up flood-prevention measures and restore reliable travel.

Heavy rains over the weekend caused monstrous traffic snarls over parts of NLEX. Traffic remained heavy along some portions of the highway on Tuesday morning amid the flooding in San Simon, Pampanga.

The company added it is closely coordinating with the Department of Transportation, Toll Regulatory Board and other government agencies to assess immediate measures to support motorists affected by days of Habagat rains and rising water levels of the Pampanga River, while speeding up necessary flood-prevention measures.

According to the MPCT, Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda earlier said the flooding reflects a broader drainage problem across the province, with water backing up because downstream areas like Macabebe and Masantol are already full and floodwater cannot readily discharge toward Manila Bay.

The company also echoed observations by Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon that the sheer volume of water brought by the southwest monsoon or Habagat overwhelmed the system. — VDV, GMA News
