DTI summons ERC, Meralco over latest billing statement

The Department of Trade and Industry has summoned officials of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to shed light on power utility's latest billing statement, which has apparently caused confusion among consumers.

"We received word that the Office of DTI-Consumer Protection Group under Undersecretary Victorio Dimagiba has summoned the ERC and Meralco regarding the consumer complaints about the latest Meralco billing," deputy presidential spokesperson Abigal Valte said in a text message to reporters on Thursday.

She said the meeting will be held at the DTI at 11:30 a.m. and that they will send updates as they become available.

In their February billing, consumers were surprised with two charges that include the actual amount due and the rate increase covered by a Supreme Court temporary restraining order that stopped Meralco from raising the cost of electricity by including the generation charges from its suppliers. – VS, GMA news
