Two lawmakers want Congress to probe the safety of imported food products used by local fast-food chains following the scandal surrounding a Chinese meat and poultry supplier servicing global brands.

House Resolution 1353 filed Thursday by  Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone and Catanduanes Rep. Cesar Sarmiento calls on the “appropriate committees” in the House of Representatives to conduct an investigation regarding the safety of food products sourced by local fast-food chains abroad.

“Imports of food chain companies in the Philippines, like Jollibee, McDonald's, Bon Chon, Chow King, Burger King, Pizza Hut, among others, must be investigated to determine whether these companies have been serving food products detrimental to the health and well-being of the people,” the lawmakers said.

The production, sale and importation of any food or food product that does not conform to applicable food quality and safety standards is prohibited and punishable under Republic Act 10611.

Shanghai Husi Food Co Ltd., a food products supplier owned by the Illinois-based OSI Group LLC., has come under fire over allegations it mixed fresh and expired meat.

The food safety scare was triggered by a television documentary in China showing the company’s workers using expired produce and picking up pieces of meat from the floor. The report also alleged the firm forged production dates.

McDonald's units in Hong Kong and Japan have temporarily pulled out meat products from their menu as a result of the controversy, while KFC and Pizza Hut parent company Yum Brands Inc. has announced it was severing its ties with the American meat supplier owning Shanghai Husi.

The OSI Group said it would "withdraw from the marketplace" all products made by its Chinese plant is in the process of conducting an internal investigation into current and former senior management.

“Swift and decisive action," including legal measures, will also be taken against those responsible for the scandal, the company said. — Xianne Arcangel/BM, GMA News
