Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Thursday said it has expanded its network reach to Istanbul after it signed a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines.

The deal was signed by PAL President and Chief Operating Officer Jaime Bautista and Turkish Airlines Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Temel Kotil during the recent International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual meeting in Miami, Florida.

“This partnership, which provides our passengers an expanded menu of travel options, will further drive demand for tourist and business travel between the Philippines and Turkey,” Bautista said.

Under the partnership, PAL will sell Turkish Airlines’ thrice-a-week flights between Istanbul and Manila.

Turkish Airlines will also sell PAL’s domestic flights to Cebu and Davao. Both airlines will offer flights across the Istanbul-Manila-Cebu/Davao route.

PAL said both carriers intend to expand the codeshare agreement once flight entitlements between the Philippines and Turkey are increased.

"The planned expanded codeshare will allow passengers to benefit from better connectivity and increased travel flexibility between both countries," PAL said in a statement.

Turkish Airlines is PAL's ninth international codeshare partner, along with Westjet, Cathay Pacific, Etihad Airlines, All Nippon, Malaysia Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Air Macau. – Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/VS, GMA News
