Smart Communications Inc. this week fired up the first three long-term evolution (LTE) cell sites using the 700-megahertz (MHz) spectrum, following its co-acquisition of the telecommunication company of San Miguel Corp. (SMC).

In a post by its external relations team on Facebook, a speed test using a cell site in Tanay, Rizal registered a whopping 222mbps.

Earlier this week, its competitor Globe also fired up its first 700MHz cell site, registering 100Mbps speed.

This comes after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) last week approved Smart to use the frequencies 720.5 to 738 and 775.5 to 793 MHz

PLDT Inc. (Smart's parent company), and Globe Telecom Inc. last Monday executed a sale and purchase agreement to buy out SMC from Vega Telecom Inc. — along with prized radio frequencies — for P69.1 billion. —JST, GMA News
