Five marble quarry sites in Romblon ordered closed

The Provincial Mining and Regulatory Board (PMRB) ordered the closure of five quarry sites in Romblon, a report on Unang Balita on Friday said.

The sites operate in a mountainous area rich with marble in Sitio Bagasyong, Brgy. Cajimos and Sitio Caray-Caray in Brgy. Agtongo in Romblon, Romblon.

Based on the inspection of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau last week together with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, a big part of the mountain in Roblon has already been denuded.

The companies operating the quarry sites are Kantoh International Marble Corporation, Agtongo-Bagasyong Marble, Agtongo Centro Miners, Romblon Development Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and Agtongo-Bagasyong Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

The firms have yet to issue statements regarding the closure.

Almost 500 miners will lose their jobs as a result of the closure order, PMRB department head Engr. Raynaldo Angel De Juan said. —KG, GMA News
