Grab confirms GrabExpress rider one of 2 Quiapo blasts fatalities

Grab Philippines on Sunday confirmed that a GrabExpress rider was one of the two fatalities in the twin blasts that hit Quiapo, Manila on Saturday night.

"Grab Philippines condemns perpetration of the bombing on Saturday at Norzagaray Street in Quiapo, Manila," Grab said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened the incident took the lives of two civilians, including one of our GrabExpress partners," it added.

The identity of the GrabExpress driver has yet to be released while the person who received the package was identified as Mohamad Bainga. Both victims died on the spot.

"Our prayers go out to those who perished, and we extend our sympathies and deepest condolences to their loved ones," Grab said.

GrabExpress is a service offered by Grab Philippines which allows customers to send parcels anywhere in Metro Manila.

The blast in Norzagaray Street was followed by a second explosion, which happened as policemen were processing the site of the first blast.

Six people, including two policemen, were injured in the two blasts.

In a radio dzBB interview, National Capital Region Police Office Director Oscar Albayalde said the GrabExpress rider picked up the package near SM Manila.

Manila Police District Explosives and Ordnance Division head Senior Superintendent Arnold Santos said in a separate dzBB interview that they found out that the package was delivered through GrabExpress following discovery of a transaction receipt.

Santos said the suspect in the first explosion may have used a two-way radio to remotely trigger the explosive contained in the package.

Grab said it is cooperating with authorities investigating the incident and has urged its partners to exercise caution in at-risk areas.

"We are one with authorities in pursuing justice for those who needlessly lost their lives and were hurt. We pledge our full support and cooperation in the conduct of their investigation," Grab said.

"Grab and our GrabExpress partners will remain vigilant and work with the police to take extra care in areas that may be identified as at risk for such incidences," it added.

Meanwhile, Malacañang called on the public to stay alert and be cautious in sharing information.

“While investigation is now ongoing, we ask the public to remain alert and immediately report to authorities any suspicious activity or movement,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.

Abella likewise said they were “saddened by the loss of lives brought by yesterday’s night explosions,” and “likewise wish for the immediate recovery of those who were wounded.”

The Manila Police District said Quiapo district will be on "lockdown" until the suspects are apprehended. —Joseph Tristan Roxas/ALG, GMA News
