Globe, 50 telcos worldwide vow transparency over climate impact

Globe Telecom and over 50 mobile operators worldwide vowed to disclose how their operations impacted the environment using a CDP global disclosure system to address climate change.

According to a statement released Globe on Saturday, the effort was part of mobile network association GSMA's initiative to develop a mobile industry action roadmap that would create a decarbonization pathway for the mobile sector by February 2020.

The goal of the project was to achieve a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, limiting the increase of the global average temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius and reducing the risks and harmful effects of climate change.

"As a telecom operator with a footprint covering two-thirds of the country’s population and thousands of cell sites nationwide, we have a responsibility to demonstrate high standards of environmental management and stewardship," Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said.

Globe revealed that it had reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 482 tonnes in 2017 and by 503.14 tonnes in 2018 through the deployment of 6,314 green network solutions, such as fuel cell systems, lithium ion batteries, free cooling systems, and hybrid DC generator systems.

The telco also planned to upgrade its infrastructure to effect a further 30 percent reduction of CO2 emission intensity based on 2017 levels. — Joahna Lei Casilao/DVM, GMA News
